Shadowing is one of the admission steps.
Potential students must shadow the program with the Marine Service Technologies instructor before signing-up for the program.

Mission: The mission of this program is to prepare students for employment as entry-level marine mechanics and train them in the everyday workings of the marine repair industry.
This program prepares the student for certification from the following organization:
Students who successfully complete the course receive
Yamaha Marine’s Introduction to Outboard Systems certification.
The ITOS certification is a pre-requisite for Yamaha’s new Maintenance Certification Program (MCP).
Program T400210 consists of a planned sequence of courses:
Marine Rigger - Course MTE0003 (300 Hours) – Students will learn entry-level skills for the outboard marine service industry. Hands-on training combined with laboratory and classroom experiences gives the student a full understanding of workplace safety and organization, trailer service, various boat materials, 2-stroke cycle outboard engines, fuel systems on boats, marine electrical systems, procedures for preparing boats to customers, capacitor discharge ignition systems, outboard engine fuel systems, and proper use of computer systems related to parts specialization.
Outboard Engine Technician - Course MTE0090 (300 Hours) – Students will learn entry-level skills for the outboard marine service industry. Hands-on training combined with laboratory and classroom experiences gives the student a full understanding of outboard 4-stroke cycle engines, charging systems, battery ignition systems, cranking systems, lubrication systems, cooling systems, lower gear cases, lower units and housing assemblies, employability, and entrepreneurship.
Outboard Engine Diagnostics Technician – Course MTE0074 (150 hours) – Students will learn entry-level skills for the outboard marine service industry. Hands-on training combined with laboratory and classroom experiences gives the student a full understanding of basic computer skills, computer-based diagnostic equipment, electrical, control box, and gauges.
Inboard Gas Engine Technician – Course MTE0092 (300 hours) – Students will learn skills for the inboard marine service industry. Hands-on training combined with laboratory and classroom experiences gives the student an understanding of basic four-stroke cycle engines, fuel systems, cooling systems, lubrication systems, ignition systems, and capacitor discharge ignition systems.
Drive Train Technician – Course MTE0093 (150 hours) – Students will learn entry-level skills for the outboard marine service industry. Hands-on training combined with laboratory and classroom experiences gives the student a full understanding of stern drive upper and lower cases, intermediate housings, and inboard gas transmissions.
Inboard Diesel Technician – Course MTE0056 (150 hours) – Students will learn entry-level skills for the diesel marine service industry. Hands-on training combined with laboratory and classroom experiences gives the student a full understanding of diesel fuel, cooling, lubrication, and charging systems.

Minimum Satisfactory Academic Progress Requirement: 75%
Minimum Attendance Requirement: 90%
Basic Skills Exit Requirement for Program Completion: Student's competency in computation (mathematics) and communication (reading/language arts) is assessed; required basic skills grade levels are: Computation - 9 and Communication - 9.
Industry Certifications and FL Ready to Work Credentials
The goal of Pinellas Technical College’s career and technical programs is for each student to achieve an industry-recognized credential or professional license. Where certifications or licenses are linked to a career, Pinellas Technical College’s goal is to prepare graduates of that career technical program for the certification or license exam. In some cases, Pinellas Technical College proctors the exams. Specific certification and license requirements are available from Pinellas Technical College school counselors and program instructors. It is an expectation that students will earn the FL Ready to Work Soft Skills credential before graduating. The Digital Skills credential is also highly recommended as all careers use technology, and it now includes Al topics. The Employability Skills credential reviews basic reading and math skills used on the job.
