Mission: The mission of the Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning/Refrigeration (HVAC/R)–IET-1 – Students enrolled in GED Preparation are eligible to participate in IET – HVAC/R which will allow students to simultaneously prepare for employment in the HVAC/R industry while completing their GED or high school diploma requirements. The ESOL program is to assist immigrants and other individuals who are English language learners in improving their skills in English and Mathematics with an understanding of the American system of government and citizenship while providing the skills and behaviors needed to secure employment in the (HVAC/R) industry. 

Since all of the above skills are necessary to work in the Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning/Refrigeration (HVAC/R) industry and to become certified as an HVAC/R Technician, coupling ESOL with HVAC/R is an excellent partnership and opportunity to help English language learners earn a trade certification at the same time as learning English.

Students may enter this program as a Level 4 ESOL student; to enter the program, there are no TABE Level minimums.  The student will either need to meet the basic requirements of TABE and CASAS goals upon completion of the program, or the student must pass the trade certification exam.  

Program C400410 (HVAC/R1) consists of a planned sequence of courses:

Introduction to HVAC/R - Course ACR0000 (250 hours) - Training includes the areas of safety, employability, tools and accessories of the heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration industry, history and concepts of heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration.

HVAC/R Fundamentals - Course ACR0001 (250 hours) - Training includes troubleshooting heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration electrical control systems, components for commercial heating and air conditioning systems, analyze fluids, pressures, refrigerants and related codes, fabricate and service the piping, tubing and fittings used in the heating, air-conditioning & refrigeration industry.

HVAC/R Service Practices - Course ACR0012 (250 hours) - Training includes mechanical components of heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration systems, operate solid stare electronics as used in HVAC systems, operate mechanical refrigeration servicing and testing equipment, assist in the installation of a residential heating and air-conditioning system and determine start-up procedures, use combustion type heating servicing and testing equipment, troubleshoot combustion gas valves and regulators as used in heating, air-conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation systems.

Minimum Attendance Requirement:  90%

Basic Skills Exit Requirement for Program Completion:  Student's competency in computation (mathematics) and communication (reading/language arts) is assessed; required basic skills grade levels are: Computation - 10 and Communication - 9.
