Student Policies
The Pinellas County School Board has adopted two updated student policies for the 2026–27 school year. Summaries are provided below. These summaries do not include all policy provisions — please review the full policies at the links provided.
Wireless Communication Devices (Policy 5500.10)
A new standalone Wireless Communication Devices policy updates the guidelines and prohibitions related to cell phones, wearable recording devices (e.g., smart glasses), and smartwatches.
Wearable Recording Devices
“Wearable recording devices” include smart glasses, augmented reality eyewear, camera-equipped eyewear, and any wearable or body-mounted technology capable of recording, transmitting, or storing audio, video, images, or communications.
- Wearable recording devices are prohibited from being used in any manner at school, during school-sponsored transportation, and during school-sponsored activities.
- They must be in the off position at all times and stored in a non-visible, secure location, such as a locker, backpack, purse, or pocket.
Smartwatches
- Students are permitted to wear smartwatches for the purposes of telling time and location tracking only.
- All of the rules applicable to wireless communication devices also apply to smartwatches.
Electric Transportation Devices (Policy 5500.09)
Student transportation rules were expanded to address e-bikes and e-scooters. An electric transportation device is any mode of transportation powered by an electric battery, regardless of its classification or power, and includes, but is not limited to, electric bikes, electric scooters, and electric skateboards.
Possession of an electric transportation device on school board property is a privilege, not a right. Students who violate this policy may be prohibited from bringing such devices onto school board property and/or may be subject to discipline under the Code of Student Conduct.
Storage, Charging & Safety
- Storage: Devices must be parked in the designated bike compounds or racks, must not block entrances or exits, and must be locked and secured by the owner.
- Charging: Devices must be charged before arriving at school. Outlets at schools or other district sites may not be used to charge personal electric transportation devices.
- Safety: Students must walk or carry their devices at all times while on school board property, including parking lots and pathways. In accordance with state law, students under 16 years of age who possess an electric bicycle must wear a helmet while riding it.
- Responsibility: Any student who brings an electric transportation device to school does so at their own risk and is personally responsible for the device’s security. School Board staff are not responsible for preventing theft, loss, damage, or vandalism.
